Strategy: Make a Picture or Mental Image
Good readers
create pictures or mind movies in their mind while listening to or reading a
book. When using your five senses to visualize what is happening in the story,
you will remember more about what you read. Adjectives in the text are helpful
in creating these mental images.
While
reading this about what you can see,
hear, feel, taste, and smell.
Please think
about a good fit book that you are reading and answer the following questions
in your Reading Duotang:
1.
What is the mental picture you have
in your mind at this point of the book?
2.
Read a few more pages. How has your
mental image changed now?
3.
Write down as words or adjectives
that you found helpful in creating your mental image.

FluencyStrategy: Read Appropriate - Level Texts That Are a Good Fit
Good readers
are a pleasure to listen to. The more
fluent our reading becomes the more alive the story becomes to our
listeners. To improve fluency we must
spend a great deal of time reading "good fit" books. If a book is too difficult then it is not a
good fit and reading fluently becomes impossible. To ensure that we are picking "good fit"
books we use the "I PICK" method.
I - I pick a
book
P - Purpose
- What is my purpose for choosing this book?
I - Interest
- Am I interested in this book?
C -
Comprehend - Do I understand what I just read?
K - Know -
Do I know most of the words?
Please take
a few minutes to do your book shop and ensure that you are using the I PICK
method to choose a good fit book. Make
sure that you choose one fiction book and one non-fiction book.
This week for our reading response we
are going write about Chapter 4 in Harry Potter. Please choose 2 of the following sentence starters and write about them in your Reading Duotang.
- The most exciting part was when......
- My favorite character is.......
